Helping celebrate 97 years
Our church celebrated her 97th Homecoming today.
Joyful Hearts, the Gospel group I sing in, was invited to give a 30 minute program before the service started.
The sanctuary was close to capacity.
And… I still look like I’m trying to pass a kidney stone when I sing.

The view
Tomorrow night, the Gospel trio I sing with will take part in our 9th annual Homecoming in the local High School auditorium.
We spent several hours today getting ready - decorating the stage, setting up our sound equipment and practicing.

And this will be the view from my microphone when we take the stage to sing.

Benefit
I got to sing a little bit this morning.
There was a benefit at one of the local churches and we were invited for the second year in a row to participate.
Last year we sang outside.
As far as I knew, we were singing outside again.
But when I drove up, there was no tent, no equipment and nobody to be seen.
My first thought was, “Man. I’m r-e-a-l-l-y early.”
My second thought was, “Man. I missed it.”
My third, and correct, thought was, “We’re inside! In the air conditioning!”
It’s much nicer to sing when sweat isn’t dripping off your nose.

You get what you pay for
Carmi held down the fort tonight while the guys and I gave a concert at a non-church venue.
We arrived at the concert location, set up the equipment and realized we didn’t have any new 9-volt batteries for our wireless mics.
No problem. There happened to be a Family Dollar store within walking distance so I sauntered on over.
Inside the store, I found the following 9-volt batteries: a single Energizer was $3.75, a single Duracell was $2.15 and a single “Family Dollar” brand was $1.00.
Pulled out my cell phone, called our manager and asked which ones he wanted me to purchase.
“Get the Family Dollar brand”, he said. “Surely they’ll last for one hour.”
Surely.
“Oh, and get 9 of them”, he added.
Bought ‘em, walked back to the venue, put 3 fresh batteries in our mics and the concert startly shortly after.
About 15-20 minutes in, one of the mics went dead. Followed quickly by another. Then another.
Long story short, we had to use all 9 “new” batteries in 1 hour.
So the moral of this story is… you get what you pay for.

Vocal session #2
Me and “the guys” (AKA Joyful Hearts) were in the studio this evening working on some vocals.
The plan was to complete 3 songs.
David and I got there early… around 3:30. We recorded our solos for 2 of the songs and finished up right about the time Ryan arrived at 5:30.
With such a good head start, we jumped into the “group” parts on the same 2 songs.
S-u-r-e-l-y they would be a breeze, we thought, even though one of the songs was brand new.
Well… not so much.
The clock read 9:00 pm by the time we finished the 2 songs and there was nothing left - physically or vocally - to do the last song any justice.
So we called it a night and will try to finish the entire project on Friday.

Working hard in the studio

Track session #2
I’ve taken the afternoon off from work because David (Joyful Hearts’ lead singer) and I are returning to the studio. Our musicians are coming back today to finish recording the last remaining tracks (5, I believe) for our first CD.
We haven’t set dates yet for our final vocal sessions but they will most likely be towards the end of October.
I’m really excited because I just found out that the studio has wireless internet access. The netbook is going in my back pocket.

7th Annual Joyful Hearts Homecoming
Gospel music is one of my passions.
Back in February, I joined up with 2 very talented guys and together we comprise a group called Joyful Hearts.
This coming Saturday, September 12th, we’ll be presenting our 7th annual Joyful Hearts homecoming in the Mooresville (NC) Senior High School auditorium. Doors open at 5:00 pm, a pre-concert with Shellem Cline starts at 5:15 and then the main program starts at 6:00.
Joining us on stage will be Mike and Kelly Bowling and Tribute Quartet.
Tickets are $15 at the door and $12 in advance. If you would like to come, let me know and I’ll make you a deal since you’re my friends.

Concert on May 17th, 2009
For those of you who might be in the area, we (Joyful Hearts) will be singing on Sunday morning, May 17th at Burke Chapel United Methodist Church in Hickory, NC. The service begins at 11:00 am.
Burke Chapel is observing their annual Homecoming.
This good ol’ Baptist loves him some Homecomings because where there is a Homecoming there is lots of good food.

3 down and 7 to go
Ryan, David and I went into the studio tonight and recorded 3 songs.
It took us 4 to 4-1/2 hours to get the 3 done. We received a rough mix on CD but Gary, the engineer, said he would mix the songs over the weekend and have the finished product for us on Monday.
I’ll wait until then to give you a listen.

Recording vocals tomorrow night
Looks like me and the guys will be in the studio TOMORROW evening, May 7th, instead of May 16th as originally planned.
Ryan had a conflict come up with the 16th. Something about a kid’s birthday party.
Priorities, man.
We’re recording vocals at Rushing Winds in Dallas, NC. If you’re in the neighborhood after 5:00, drop by and say howdy.
