Trunk or Treat 2012
This is the Halloween that almost wasn’t.
Our church sponsored a Trunk or Treat event again this year. The event was to begin at 5:30 and those who were decorating their automobiles could start arriving at 4:00 to set up.
I left work at 3:00 and hurried home to dig out from the pile of garbage that was in clean out the van.
As 4:00 pm approached, I tossed all the decorations, supplies and kiddos into the van. Then I hopped in, turned the ignition key and… click, click, click. The battery was dead.
We just sat there for a moment. Even the kiddos were awkwardly quiet.
About now, you’re probably thinking that I was all righteous and prayed over the van.
Truth is, I did bow my head. And then I started laughing.
“What’s funny, Dad?” Eliana asked.
“Nothing, honey. Absolutely n-o-t-h-i-n-g.”
Fortunately, Carmi left work early too and was home between 5:15 and 5:30. And she came bearing gifts… jumper cables and a good battery under the hood of her car.
Within a few minutes, the van cranked and we were on our merry way.
Our theme this year was Angry Birds.
We even set up a desktop PC with an offline version of the Angry Birds game and let trick-or-treaters play.

Eliana didn’t wear a costume this year.
Karys dressed up for a 50s sock hop. With a heavy dose of sass.

Planking
Ever heard of planking?
I think Carmi and Karys are doing it and didn’t even know it.

Mummies
Carmi and Eliana took a little mother-daughter trip today to… Egypt?
No. They visited the Mummies of the World exhibition at Discovery Place.

A new challenge
What are we doing close to midnight?
Cleaning a few year’s worth of lint out of the guts of our dryer, of course.
Carmi needed a new challenge. Replacing an ice maker is just too easy.

Silver bells
Do you hear those silver bells?
No, it’s not Christmas. Yet.
It’s the sound of me and Carmi celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary today.
In honor of my lovely bride, here are 25 (more) reasons I love my wife:
- She’s a people person.
- She’s a leader.
- She can follow when necessary.
- She’s forgotten more Bible than I’ll ever know.
- She rarely cooks food that she likes but no one else likes.
- Her freckles.
- Her distaste for drama.
- Her concern for the plight of the orphan.
- The look she gives me when I’m going to McDonalds for a cup of coffee.
- Actually, the look she gives me most any time.
- Her love of country music. Not.
- She constantly tells our children she loves them even when they don’t respond in kind. *cough* Zane and Eliana *cough*
- She’s an encourager.
- Her willingness to serve.
- Her fearlessness at Carowinds. Well… except for the Intimidator. Oh… and the pirate ship that leaves you hanging upside down.
- She doesn’t talk constantly on the cellphone.
- She doesn’t hug a lot but when she does, it feels like she doesn’t want to let go.
- The laughter when she’s laying with the girls at bedtime.
- Her appreciation for Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
- Her smile and wave when I come home and she’s on the phone.
- She always wants to do what’s right.
- She’s my conscience.
- She can sew.
- She has a coolheadedness about her in challenging situations.
- Her curiosity. Especially when a door is closed.
Need more reasons? Look here, here and here.

Oh my heaven… Carmi is…
47?
Ok… ok…
So I don’t get paid to be a poet.
Happy Birthday, sweetie!

Groovin’ when the sun went down
I don’t like country music.
My wife does.
And now my daughters - my beautiful, precious daughters - have been warped.
Eliana and Karys routinely ask me to turn on the radio or play a CD in the car. Sometimes I oblige. Sometimes I don’t.
Not long after Carmi bought a Kenny Chesney CD, the girls started asking me to play that CD. In particular, a song entitled, “When the Sun Goes Down”.
Now an unspoken rule around our house is that the person driving controls the radio and CD player. So when I drive, which is most of the time, I don’t play Kenny Chesney.
Except for that ONE time when I did play THAT song and both girls sang it practically word-for-word.
They were like mini Judds. I truly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Up until now, Kenny has been relegated to our automobiles. But tonight, shortly after Carmi went in the girls’ room to “lay down” with them, I heard that song wafting out of the room monitor.
No she didn’t.
I knew I had to give Carmi a hard time about that. So I slunk across the house and eased open their door - half expecting to see them on the verge of slumber.
Instead of being in bed, all 3 girls were up and dancing around the room.
Or maybe I should say they were “groovin’ when the sun went down”.

The handywoman
Our ice maker died just prior to my hospitalization so Carmi has been digging ice out of a bag for over 3 weeks.
I’m surprised she’s lasted this long.
On Friday, she went to Lowes and bought a new ice maker. Today she replaced it herself.
My wife, the handywoman.

Working from home
Carmi worked from home today.
As a matter of fact, she’ll be working from home every Friday for an indefinite period of time at her company’s encouragement.
It’s kinda like an early Christmas present.

A get well card
Carmi came home and went straight to bed.
Eliana, being the compassionate child that she is, decided to make mommy a ‘get well’ card to help her feel better.

On the way home
Poor Carmi.
She just called to tell me that she left work early and that she is on the way home and heading straight to our family doctor for a drop-in appointment. She started losing her voice on Tuesday and just hasn’t felt well since.
Hopefully she can kick whatever it is.
UPDATE: The doctor thinks she has the flu. How’s THAT for a present?!?
