So much to learn

The girls, bless their little hearts, were their normal chatty selves tonight during dinner.

During a surprising lull in conversation near the end of the meal, Zane commented that he would like a girlfriend who didn’t talk much.

Once I stopped laughing and caught my breath, I said, “Son, I have news for you…”

Our poor boy. He still has so much to learn.

Much quieter than usual

All of the kids in our usual after-church-on-Sunday-evening dinner crowd were busy with their DSIs in the restaurant tonight. Well… except for Karys and she has one but doesn’t normally bring it.

It was MUCH quieter than we are accustomed to. But none of the adults complained.

Dan Nicholas Park

We took a road trip this afternoon and went to Dan Nicholas Park.

Carmi took the girls gem mining there 2 years ago while I was recuperating from my infected elbow. They enjoyed it so much that we did it today. Zane even said it was fun.

And of course we were planning all along to let the kids get soaked on the splash pad. They didn’t let us down.

Back scratches

Eliana was sitting on our bedroom floor with Sagwa this morning while I was getting ready for the day.

She said, “Dad… cats are just like you. They like back scratches too.”

So he can dig

This is a sampling of the nails on Zane’s hands.

As we were sitting down for dinner tonight, Eliana said, “Mom… Zane wants to let his pinky nail grow so he can dig in his ears.”

He smiled and nodded in agreement.

Eww.

A brother?

There was a note in the mailbox at lunch for each of the 3 kids.

Zane and Eliana were in the living room when I handed them their note. Karys was sitting at the kitchen table finishing some lunch.

“Karys, you got a letter!”

As I handed her the piece of mail, she had a confused look on her face.

“I’m gettin’ a brother???”

I almost think she was relieved when she realized what I really said.

Summer in one word

Today is the first (official) day of summer.

If I was to describe summer in one word it would be…

fireflies.

How about you?

Karate Kid

We all went to a matinee this afternoon and watched the remake of Karate Kid.

On November 10, 2008, Variety reported that work on a Karate Kid remake had begun and that the new film would “borrow elements from the original plot”. This new film didn’t just borrow SOME elements from the 1984 original. The 2010 version was an EXACT storyline duplicate. But I liked this one better because the movie was filmed in Beijing, China and the background scenery was absolutely beautiful.

Jaden Smith’s character did use some expletives… d_ _ _ was used once and a _ _ was used three times so bear that in mind if you take your younger ones.

There was one point in the movie where Jaden’s character, Dre, and his “love” interest, a Chinese girl named Meiying, kissed. At that particular spot, the theater was v-e-r-y quiet. All of a sudden, Karys says, “Ooooh… yuck!” which gave quite a few patrons a good laugh.

Oh… and there was another scene in the movie when Jackie Chan and Jaden are on a train. Jaden is talking non-stop and asking all kinds of questions. Jackie says, “Just be quiet”. Karys popped up and said, “That’s what mommy always says to me!”.

The first day of summer vacation

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before but Carmi is changing jobs. Yesterday was the final day at her previous job and she starts her new job on Monday. So today she was home with the rest of us.

This morning, Carmi registered Eliana in our public library’s Summer Reading Program. Eliana’s goal is 30 books which, over the course of the 10-week summer, averages out to 3 books per week.

One book series she is interested in is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Have your kids read it?

On another front, Zane and Eliana have been begging for a new Wii game.

I told them I would buy a new game only if and when they finished Super Mario Brothers. Well guess what? Today it happened. They collected the final coin in the final level of the final world.

Being a dad of my word, we went to Target and they chose the new Super Mario Galaxy 2.

So guess what we’ll be doing tomorrow? Well, yeah… that… but I also think we’ll go see the new Karate Kid movie starring Jackie Chan.

Let the summer begin

Today was the last day of school for Zane and Eliana and praise God they were both promoted.

There wasn’t really any question for Eliana but Zane… well… there was a dose of uncertainty.

Zane was not required to take EOQs (End of Quarter tests) this year. But by the end of school, he had been home for over a year which meant that, by law, he was required to take the EOGs (End of Grade tests) for math and reading. He passed the math portion with flying colors but didn’t do well on the reading portion and had to retake the reading test yesterday.

With his retest, we made sure that Zane had his electronic translator and his English-Chinese dictionary that we bought in China last year. However, he was only allowed to use one or the other but not both. He opted for the dictionary because he said the translator was not real accurate.

He seemed very confident yesterday when I came home from work. The dictionary evidently made a world of difference because he scored a 92 this time.

I’m so very proud of him. And Eliana too.

Let the summer begin.
