Iron Man 2

Zane and I had a guy’s afternoon out and went to a matinee showing of Iron Man 2. I thought it would be good for him and I to do something together… alone… since Eliana practically smothers the poor guy.

One negative was that the theater was packed out and we had to sit r-e-a-l-l-y close to the screen. Which meant that it was r-e-a-l-l-y loud. In fact, Zane commented about the volume after just a few minutes into the movie. But popcorn helped him overlook the decibel level.

I really liked the movie. It certainly wasn’t Oscar material but then I didn’t expect it to be. It’s all about the suit, baby.

Karys’ last day in preschool

Karys was pretty laid back this morning for it to be her last day in preschool. Of course, she’s always like that.

But wait… didn’t she graduate last weekend?

Yes. Her school was going to have graduation tomorrow but… well… it’s Memorial Day weekend and several families were going to be gone. So they had one more week of class after wearing their caps and gowns.

The visitor

Between my mom and her neighbor, they have 2 (wild) momma cats that are fertile myrtles and keep their yards stocked with a steady supply of kittens. The current count is 10 cats.

Mom was f-i-n-a-l-l-y, after many previous attempts, able to trap one of the mommas.

Carmi took the cat this morning to a clinic for a “fixing”. Some friends of ours picked the cat up before the clinic closed and brought her to our house.

We’re playing host until tomorrow morning when she’ll be returned to mom’s house and released.

Karys’ preschool graduation

Karys is officially a rising kindergartener because today she graduated from preschool.

She was SO excited at home this morning. She could not WAIT to get there and “gradulate”.

This is her teacher, Miss Shannon.

This is her other teacher, Miss Melissa.

She really WAS excited but you couldn’t tell it when the class walked out. She looked so serious.

This is Karys’ buddy, Samuel.

As the students walked up to get their “diploma”, the announcer shared the student’s name and what he or she wanted to be when they grow up. Karys said she wanted to be a mommy and a teacher in church. She was also going to marry Samuel and they were going to have 3 children. And she has told Carmi before that her children will be adopted.

Zane’s decision

We’re in the midst of revival services at our church.

At the end of tonight’s service, Zane prayed and asked Jesus Christ to be his personal Lord and Savior. He’s now been adopted twice… first, into the Henderson family and now second, into God’s family.

Most of the time during a church service, Zane is busy reading… or drawing… or coloring… or playing with Transformers… or taking a nap.

But tonight was different. Tonight he didn’t fidget. He sat straight up with his hands in his lap and his head cocked to one side as he watched and listened intently to the guest preacher.

I’ve seen that head position before. It’s the same way he sits and watches his favorite cartoons on television. So I knew he was paying attention.

Several times, Eliana or Karys tugged on his shirt and tryed talking to him but he brushed them off and kept his gaze fixed on the messenger.

When the invitation was extended, Carmi looked at him like, “You want to go?”

He shook his head, “Yes”, and away we all went.

While the evening was serious, there were a few light moments. We expect nothing less with our kids.

At the completion of the service, our family was asked to stand up front so everyone could walk by and speak to Zane. After about two-thirds of the l-o-n-g processional of people had passed, Zane looked up at me and said, “Dad, when someone accepts Jesus, there’s a LOT of hugging!”

And at one point, Eliana walked up and tugged on my arm so I would lean down and she could tell me something. “Dad,” she said, “even though big brothers accept Jesus, they’re still annoying!”

Another reminder

In an effort to clean out and simplify our kitchen cabinets, all the sippy cups are now going.

Just another reminder that our “babies” are growing up.

Waah.

Under their wings

Zane’s school had their annual “Spring Fling” today.

There were inflatable attractions, games, a dunking booth, etc. It’s like a very mini carnival put on by the Parent-Teacher Organization.

We were quite disappointed. There wasn’t nearly as much for the kids to do there this year compared to last year.

Darn economy.

Just as we were preparing to leave, a young man ran up to Zane and said, “Hi”. It was Zane’s mentor, ‘T’,  from last year.

‘T’, who moved on up to middle school this year, remarked about how much Zane had grown.

And then he said something that was very sweet.

He said, “I wish Zane could have come with us.”

While I know Carmi and I made the right decision to hold Zane back in the 6th grade this year, I really felt sad for him that his friends he quickly made last March would be moving on.

The good thing is, they’ll be there in the Fall when Zane starts middle school.

Hopefully they, and especially ‘T’, will take him under their wings once again.

Ibuprofen will be my friend

Our church’s Youth Ministry had a lock-in last night at the YMCA in a neighboring town. Since Carmi and I work with the Youth and Zane is… well… a Youth (by age though not by grade), he and I tagged along.

Zane spent some time in the pool even though he and our Youth Pastor were the only guys there. Swimming seemed to be the first activity of choice for the girls while most of the guys started playing pick-up basketball.

Well, I just had to have me some o’dat.

So what if I hadn’t played a serious game of basketball in probably 15 years?

So what if I’m now 47 and a good 15 pounds heavier than I should be.

I went out there and ran with the young’uns. Full-court.

I scored s-e-v-e-r-a-l points.

And while I spent more time gasping for air than sinking baskets, there was a saving grace… a lot of those young’uns were bent over grabbing their knees just like me.

Then it was time for racquetball.

Neither Zane nor I had ever so much as held a racquetball racquet before much less played a game.

After swatting the ball around for a while, we asked our Youth Pastor for a lesson because he has played some. And then we challenged him to a doubles match.

By the time we had humiliated ourselves enough, I looked at my cell phone and it was 2:30. As in AM. That means in the morning.

My body had had enough. So Zane and I packed up our stuff and came home.

I have a feeling that Ibuprofen will be my friend today.

That is, if I can get out of bed to get it.

Good to get outside

Karys is such a sensitive soul.

I hopped on Eliana’s bike and Karys said, “Dad… your butt is TOO big!”
