Driver’s Ed
Zane has never learned to ride a bike so Eliana gave him some one-on-one this afternoon.

Earth Day concert
The 2nd grade students at Eliana’s school presented an Earth Day concert this evening. They sang 5 songs and the program lasted around 25 minutes.
After every song, Zane would ask, “Dad, when can we go home?”

Eliana, bless her heart, simply does not do well when she has to stand in front of people.
Not. At. All.

She was talking about the program while I was getting her ready for bed tonight.
She said, “All the people were staring at me.”
“Honey,” I tryed reassuring her, “the ONLY people staring at YOU were me, mommy, Zane and Karys. The other parents were watching their own children.”
Ugh.
To calm her frazzled nerves, we all went to the extended book fair in the school library afterwards.

Free car
We learned something interesting at dinner tonight.
Zane said when a student turned 18 at his boarding school in China, the school would give that student a car.
I asked Zane if the school would teach students how to drive and he said, “No.”
:ohh:

Annual wellness checks
Eliana and Karys had their annual wellness checks this afternoon.
The downside to the whole trip was that Karys, bless her heart, needed 3 shots for kindergarten.
Do you have any idea how LOUD a little 38-pound girl can scream?
Do you have any idea how heartbreaking it is to hold her little hands while she’s staring straight into your eyes and screaming “B-a-a-a-a-a b-a-a-a-a-a” (which is Chinese for daddy)?
Ugh.

Counting down the days
I love this little stinker.
She is counting down the days until preschool is over and she’s finally in “big” school (kindergarten).

Little Carmi
I was stroking Karys’ long hair this morning before taking the kiddos to school.
“I need to take you for a haircut,” I said.
She agreed. “I want short hair like mommy so I can be a little Carmi.”
H-o-o-o-o-o-e-y! This house ain’t big enough for TWO Carmis.

Oh my heaven… Carmi is…
47?
Ok… ok…
So I don’t get paid to be a poet.
Happy Birthday, sweetie!

Weekend bullet train 4.18.10
1. Party with friends on Friday night.
2. Yard sale for Carmi’s niece yesterday (Saturday) morning. We wrapped it up around 5:00ish. It was a l-o-o-o-o-o-ng day.
3. We had lunch at mom’s house after church today and celebrated Carmi’s birthday a day early.

4. We left mom’s house and went straight to a local Chinese church service.

5. They had a catered Chinese meal afterwards and Zane ate a plateful even though we finished lunch just 2 hours earlier.
6. We left the Chinese church service and went straight to the evening service at our own church.
7. Needless to say, nothing was accomplished at home today.
8. After church, Karys was mad about “something” (surprise, suprise) and Zane took great pleasure in pointing it out.

9. Karys was none too happy with her big brother.

10. At dinner tonight, the wait staff came out to sing “Happy Birthday” to Carmi but I had to send them back because Carmi had taken Karys to the bathroom.

The thinker
Tomorrow morning, my mom is hosting a benefit yard sale for Carmi’s niece who will have back surgery soon.
We spent a couple of hours late this afternoon getting the bulk of the “stuff” moved and in place.
But the kids were easily distracted. They found a lot of “toys” that they preferred to play with.

Eliana is the
Thinker.

She needs more TV
During breakfast this morning, Zane told me about a group of students from the middle school who came to his school yesterday and sang “We Are the World”.
“I like that song.”, he said. “I think Michael Jackson sang it.”
Eliana perked up. “Michael Jackson? I didn’t know he could sing!”
I just looked at her.
“Well… I didn’t know. I thought he was a football player.”
I thought for a second. “There’s not a football player named Michael Jackson. Do you mean Michael Jordan?”
“Yeah. Michael Jordan.”
“Ummm… he didn’t play football. He played basketball.”
“Whatever.”

Bullet train 4.12.10
- Pollen, how I hate thee… let me count the ways.
- I suppose that’s why I don’t like the color yellow.
- My throat feels like I swallowed a piece of steel wool.
- You know summer is approaching when Eliana starts getting grass stains on her pants.
- We need to buy stock in a stain remover company.
- I find it hard to complete one task at home before moving on to another.
- Is that a character flaw?
- Did you hear about the budget airline that wants to charge passengers to use the toilet?
- The great debate has been settled… my booty is bigger than Carmi’s.
- She probably didn’t think I would admit that online.

We need to start running
When Eliana and I went out in the backyard late this afternoon, she challenged me to a race,
I ain’t takin’ no smack from anybody… but especially not from an 8-year-old.
So we sprinted from a tree on one side of the yard to a tree on the other side and back again.
We actually raced twice… and she and I crashed at the end of each race.
Between labored breaths, I said, “Eliana, we need to start running together.”
“Why?”
“Well… we both could stand to get in better shape.”
“OK. We can run down to McDonalds!”

Alice in Wonderland
I took Zane and Eliana to see the new Alice in Wonderland.
Eliana’s opinion of the movie… “Good!”
Zane’s opinion… “Mmmm…”
My opinion… “Weird!”
But Tim Burton did direct it. So how could I expect anything less?

Hair, hair go away
Zane got a haircut today.
This cut was a lot shorter than his first one back before Christmas.
But he likes it. And we think it looks great.
