An anniversary I would rather forget

Anniversaries are normally times to reflect on special events in our life, right? Well, today is the anniversary of an event I would rather forget.

It was one year ago today when my left elbow blew up with a strep infection that put me in the hospital for almost 2 weeks.

Aaaaah. Good times. Not.

Daddy giveth and daddy taketh away

We met up with Kirk, Cindy, Harrison, Zeke and Lillie Mei Wilkerson at Carowinds today.

This family adopted Lillie Mei through our agency about 1-1/2 years ago. Even though they live fairly close to us, we’ve not had many opportunities to get together so it was really nice to spend some time with them.

Zane, Karys and I were sitting around towards the end of the afternoon waiting for Carmi and Eliana to finish up a ride.

Zane snuggled up real close to me and said, “I like my daddy”.

All right, son. You get a big ol’ brownie point.

A few minutes later, he was staring at my head and reached up to touch a couple of spots like he was counting.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“You have too many white hairs.”

Fine. You know that brownie point I gave you earlier? I think I’ll just take it back!

The first photo

This was the first photo that Carmi and I ever made together. It was Memorial Day weekend in 1986.

At the time, my sister and brother-in-law were living in Washington, DC so Carmi and I flew to visit with them in the nation’s capital.

The trip was particularly memorable because it was my first time on a plane.

I’m probably smiling because I’m glad to be back on the ground. Carmi is smiling because she can’t believe she’s got a dude with such unbelievably hot 80s hair.

Our Kodak moment was snapped on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival 2009

We went to the Dragon Boat Festival at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius today. The weatherman was forecasting rain for later in the afternoon so Carmi and I thought we could get in and out before the showers came.

We arrived, made a quick tour of about half the booths, sat down for a little picnic lunch courtesy of the Philippinos and then the proverbial bottom fell out just as we finished eating.

Even with umbrellas, we all still got pretty wet despite taking shelter under a big tree.

Once the rain stopped and sunshine parted the clouds, we paid a visit to the remaining booths. One very interesting booth was for a company called KylinTV.

KyLinTV is a service that streams tv shows, movies and news from mainland China via your broadband internet connection and through a little yellow box connected to your TV set. There are different packages just as we have with our cable companies here in the US but the basic package is just $16.99 per month.

I’m thinking we may give it a try. Poor Zane would probably enjoy some programming from back home I’m sure.

After talking with the nice folks at the booth, they gave us a 2-DVD set of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony for free. They said this particular DVD collection was not available for purchase in the States, did not have commercials and was in both Chinese and English.

v4.0 is online

After about 2-1/2 years, it was time for a new look around here so v4.0 of our blog is now online.

If you encounter any odd behavior (bugs) as you wander around, please let me know.

The site should look presentable in Internet Explorer. However, it will always look best in a standards-compliant browser like Firefox, the Henderson’s browser of choice.

update: The comments should be working now.

She could take him

2009_0513aCarmi just told me that she put Zane on scales today and he weighed a whopping 74 pounds. Hey, he’s gained 4 pounds since coming home.

Eliana? She tips the scales at 70 pounds.

I believe she could take him.

Concert on May 17th, 2009

For those of you who might be in the area, we (Joyful Hearts) will be singing on Sunday morning, May 17th at Burke Chapel United Methodist Church in Hickory, NC. The service begins at 11:00 am.

Burke Chapel is observing their annual Homecoming.

This good ol’ Baptist loves him some Homecomings because where there is a Homecoming there is lots of good food.

The first time…

2009_0511aThere aren’t too many things in this world that I absolutely hate. Hate is such a strong word, ya know?

However.

I hate spiders. Carmi is none too fond of them either.

So how lucky is it for us that Zane has an interest in arachnids?

Honestly, I think part of their attraction is because he knows…oh, he knows…that baba and mama can’t stand them.

Now I’m all about supporting our children and encouraging them in their interests.

But I swear. The first time he puts one on me…

Mommy in training

One of our nieces had a baby girl just one week ago so we visited with her a while this afternoon.

Eliana wanted to hold the newest addition to our family. From the look on Eliana’s face, I think she was afraid she was going to break her.

Want to hear something ironic?

Want to hear something ironic?

OK. So you know how most products in our stores say “made in China”?

We went to an Asian Market this afternoon that we hadn’t been to before. Meandering about, I saw a bag of kimchi. Looking closely, I noticed that the product said “made in the USA”.

Go figure.
