We drove out to see the Hoke's new house this evening. Rarely do Eliana and her second cousins, Trent and Ashley, slow down long enough to catch a breath much less allow someone an opportunity to capture a kodak moment on film. Somehow their Aunt Kerry was able to pull it off. Me thinks that bribery must have been involved?

We had a yard sale this morning. Yard sales aren't bad but having to get up at 5:00 am on a Saturday REALLY stinks. We don't even get up that early during the work week for crying out loud.
As usual, Eliana wanted to do something...anything...to help once the sale began. Carmi suggested that she ask "customers" if she could help them find something.
Well, Eliana did better than that.
On several occasions, ladies would be kneeling down to look through a box of books or clothes or knick-knacks. Our little saleslady would prance right up, look them in the face and ask, "Whatchu wanna buy?".
If they didn't respond in a timely manner, she would grab the closest piece of junk and inquire, "Wanna buy dis?".
I think she actually did sell a book! Guess we owe a commission...

One of my all-time favorite television shows is Gilligan's Island so I was very sad to hear that Bob Denver, who played Gilligan, died on September 2.
From the CNN website...
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) - Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy castaway Gilligan on the 1960s TV show "Gilligan's Island" made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died. He was 70.
He died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina of complications from treatment he was receiving for cancer, his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
His wife, Dreama, and children Patrick, Megan, Emily and Colin were with Denver, who also had undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year.
"He was my everything and I will love him forever," Dreama Denver said in a statement.
Denver's signature role was Gilligan, but when he took the role in 1964 he was already widely known to TV audiences for another iconic character, Maynard G. Krebs, the bearded beatnik friend of Dwayne Hickman's Dobie in the "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which aired on CBS from 1959 to 1963.
Krebs, whose only desire was to play the bongos and hang out at coffee houses, would shriek every time the word "work" was mentioned in his presence.
Gilligan, on the other hand, was industrious but inept. And his character was as lovable as he was inept. Viewers embraced the skinny kid in the Buster Brown haircut and white sailor hat. So did the Minnow's skipper, Jonas Grumby, who was played by Alan Hale Jr., and who always referred to his first mate affectionately as "little buddy."
"As silly as it seems to all of us, it has made a difference in a lot of children's lives," Dawn Wells, who played castaway Mary Ann Summers, once said. "Gilligan is a buffoon that makes mistakes and I cannot tell you how many kids come up and say, 'But you loved him anyway.' "
TV critics were less kind, dismissing the show as inane. But after it was canceled by CBS in 1967, it found new audiences over and over in syndicated reruns and reunion films, including 1981's "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island." (It also led to the recent TBS reality series "The Real Gilligan's Island.")
One of the most recent of those films was 2001's "Surviving Gilligan's Island: The Incredibly True Story of the Longest Three-Hour Tour in History," in which other actors portrayed the original seven-member cast while three of the four surviving original members, including Denver, narrated and reminisced.
"Gilligan's Island" writer-creator Sherwood Schwartz insisted that the show had social meaning along with the laughs: "I knew that by assembling seven different people and forcing them to live together, the show would have great philosophical implications."
Denver went on to star in other TV series, including "The Good Guys" and "Dusty's Trail," as well as to make numerous appearances in films and TV shows.
But he never escaped the role of Gilligan, so much so that in one of his top 10 lists -- "the top 10 things that will make you stand up and cheer" -- "Late Show" host David Letterman once simply shouted out Denver's name to raucous applause.
"It was the mid-'70s when I realized it wasn't going off the air," Denver told The Associated Press in 2001, noting then that he enjoyed checking eBay each day to keep up on the prices "Gilligan's Island" memorabilia were fetching.
"I certainly didn't set out to have a series rerun forever, but it's not a bad experience at all," he added.

Here is a portion of an article I found in the Local and State section of The Charlotte Observer today:
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plans to teach Chinese at several schools, a move that would make the district among the first nationwide to offer the language of the emerging economic superpower.
Mandarin Chinese debuts this year at Independence and Olympic high schools, and Smith Academy of International Languages. Next month, the school board is expected to launch an immersion program for kindergarten and first grade.
I think this is great! Hopefully more school districts will begin to teach Chinese as a second language **cough** our town **cough**.
The article concluded with this paragraph:
“Chinese is rated a Category IV language—considered the toughest to learn. Instead of a 26-letter alphabet of phonetic sounds, it has about 10,000 symbols. To be literate, students need to learn 3,000 to 5,000 and how they can be combined.” said Scott McGinnis of the Defense Language Institute which provides language training for the military.

Due to a shortage of anything important to talk about for the last couple of days - except for the long frappin' lines at gas stations - I submit the following website for your enjoyment...

I spent the early part of the evening playing with my new toy.
When we rearranged our bedroom over the weekend, part of the master plan was to ditch the TV, move the computer in and use the new 19" flat panel monitor in place of the television.
I bought a TV card at lunch and installed it in the desktop PC and it works like a champ. The monitor's viewing area is the same height as the viewing area in our original television and only 1" less in width but it's really not noticeable.
I did stop long enough to eat and take the family on a road trip to Wally World. Carmi wanted to buy some new table lamps for our bedside nightstands.
We truly don't watch much TV except for the news...and the Travel channel...and the Weather channel...or the History channel...oh, and the Learning channel...and let's not forget the Disney channel...but it's pretty cool to be working on the net and just open another window to catch our favorite shows.
I can see it now. Eventually I'll have to get another 19" flat panel and run a dual-monitor setup. I need to join Geeks Anonymous.

I was driving down Hwy 150 on the way to a computer store at lunch when a doe came from out of nowhere and ran head-first into the Camry. Surprisingly the car didn't sustain any damage but the same can not be said for the poor deer. I'm certainly not a member of PETA and I'll eat a chicken, cow or pig in a skinny minute but I still felt awful about killing Bambi. Rest in peace...
Update: Carmi called me at work and asked if I wanted venison for supper. Ha! Ha, ha! Bop upside the head...

Oh my gawsh...I'll be popping Ibuprofen like candy all day. Even my back side hurts! I certainly don't get a lot of exercise but I'm not a complete couch potato so I really didn't think I was so out of shape. Seems that there are two options...exercise more or work less. I'm leaning towards the latter. Dear?

Me and my big mouth. It never ceases to amaze me how such a little thing can cause such big trouble!
I had cut grass in the back yard this morning, took a break for lunch and then headed back out just long enough to finish bagging several big piles of grass clippings. When I finished, I came inside at the tail-end of a TV program that Carmi was watching called
Trading Spaces.
The credits began to roll and she commented,
"I'm always motivated to do something to our house after watching a show like that".
In my infinite wisdom and without so much as stopping to think, I countered with,
"Ya know...I have actually been thinking about how we could rearrange our bedroom" and then proceeded to explain my vision with gusto.
A few seconds later she nods her head in approval and crys out,
"Let's do it!!".
Just like that, I had another job to do.
We measured and moved and groaned and grunted. When the dust settled at the end of the day, we had a brand new bedroom. Our bodies ache pretty bad right now so it will be interesting to see if we can get out of bed tomorrow.
As an aside, here's a picture of Eliana before I interrupted her afternoon nap. Oh yeah...she really likes stuffed toys...

Carmi was scrapbooking all evening so the Empress and I had a date. Woohoo!
I went all out tonight and took her to one of the finest eating establishments in town...the Chick-Fil-A. For eight bucks and change, we dined until full and then headed straight for the indoor play area.
There were no kids in that play area the entire time we were eating. As soon as I emptied our tray and headed for the door with Eliana in tow, we were almost run over by a young boy and girl clamoring to get in. I'm not good at guessing ages but I would say they were probably in the first or second grade and accompanied by a young fellow who appeared to be in his early teens. Kids are kids, I know, but these two were quite obnoxious.
After listening to them scream like banshees for a good fifteen to twenty minutes, they were called down by their guardian and started making their way to the exit. As they headed out, I heard the boy say something like,
"A kid with dark hair peed up there".
Now there had been a few more children in and out - two little boys with black hair and a couple of really young girls with blonde hair - but I just KNEW that the brat was talking about mine.
I called Eliana out and as she stepped into view, sure enough...her pants and socks were soaked. She had the most pitiful look on her face and kept saying,
"I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." as we walked to the car. I couldn't be too mad.
Not long after E and I arrived home, Carmi called to see what we were up to and Eliana was little miss chatty patty as she talked to Mommy.
