A Night Out On The Town

Carmi went to a scrapbooking party with her friend, Jennifer, tonight so Eliana and I enjoyed a night out on the town.

We waited on Carmi to come home from work just to say "hey" before taking off for Monterey's. Monterey's, in my opinion, is the best Mexican restaurant in town. Many others thought so too because the place was hoppin' but the young man at the door seated us quickly.

Eliana loves the chips and salsa as much as I do so we made quick work of the basket first handed to us. Then our food arrived and as we ate, she filled me in on the soap opera at Preschool. You know...this one is not that one's friend, what this one did to another and who is not on the birthday party guest list. Heavy stuff for 3-year-olds!

We finished our meal and then headed just two doors down to the pet store. Eliana ran around for a good 20 minutes oohing and aahing over puppies, kittens, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, birds, fish, snakes and lizards. The lizards came about 'that' close to making her crap her pants, though.

imageThere was a terrarium in the back of the store with probably eight green, scaly lizards piled on top of each other in one corner. The terrarium was low enough to the ground that she could stand on her own and peer through the glass which she happily did. Her little nose was almost touching the glass when she got the bright idea to tap on the glass and try to wake them up. On about the second rap, that whole pile of lizards made a mad dash and literally crashed into the back side of the terrarium in an effort to escape. They made quite a clatter and startled her so badly that the child jumped a mile high. Made me jump too. I started laughing but the Empress was not amused so our date ended that quickly.

I don't know that she'll be able to watch those Geico insurance commercials again.

Second Fiddle to a Princess

Eliana goes through phases with her movies where she'll watch a particular movie over and over and over again. First it was 'Mulan' and then 'Mulan II'. Later came 'Finding Nemo' followed by 'Monsters, Inc'. After Christmas it was 'Big Bird in China' which she received for a present. Now in the last week or so she has been obsessing over 'Cinderella' which she also received as a present.

This morning she didn't want to watch her usual cartoons but opted instead to pick up where we left Cinderella last night at bedtime. She settled in with her morning dosage of milk and was 'in the zone': sitting cross-legged, leaning slightly forward towards the television set, those beautiful dark brown eyes with dilated pupils fixed sternly on the screen and mouth hanging open.

I stretched out beside her for some quality time before leaving the house and I couldn't help but notice that her little brown neck was exposed and vulnerable. Now I love to snoot on her neck and get her started giggling so I jumped at the opportunity.

As soon as the tip of my big nose touched her neck, she swatted me away without so much as batting an eye.

Not to be denied, I lunged the second time only to meet rejection again. She pushed me away and in an aggravated tone said, "Dad I love you but just don't bother me right now!"

Danged if I'll play second fiddle to a Princess.

This picture was taken on November 3, 2002. Winnie took us to a park in Changsha where there were many families with lots of really, really cute kids running around.

Happy Dream

I picked Eliana up from Preschool at noon today and the two of us went to my Mom's house for lunch.

Several times through the course of our meal together, Eliana said that she went to the park yesterday and played with her friend, Lilly. Highly unlikely, I thought to myself, since the Lilly she knows lives about 60-70 miles away. On the other hand, Carmi WAS off yesterday for MLK's birthday and kept Eliana at home so a play date was possible. She would have told me about something like that, though, if it was planned.

So tonight I asked Carmi if the two of them went to the park yesterday and she said "No".

"Eliana, who did you say you played with yesterday?"

"I went to the park last night with my friend, Lilly, and we played and played and played."

Carmi picked up on the words 'last night' and a light bulb went off. Evidently the Empress was dreaming and what a vivid dream it was for her to tell the story all day long as though it really happened. I'm just glad it was a happy dream.

It’s Just a Phase, Isn’t It?

Carmi seems to think that a popular children's show has created a bit of a dilemma in the Henderson home.

The Wiggles are watched religiously every morning before leaving for Preschool. In one of their programs, Anthony - the 'blue' Wiggle who is infatuated with food - said that his stomach was hurting because he ate too much. Now in the mind of an impressionable Empress, her little brain has suddenly intrepreted this statement to mean that her stomach will hurt IF she eats. Period.

Oh, it's fun. Just tell her to wash hands for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a predictable tirade begins and lasts well into the meal. "I'm not hungry" or "I don't wanna eat" or our personal favorite which is "I don't like food". She used to do a decent job of feeding herself but that motor skill has been lost along the way.

And then there's bedtime.

It's just a phase. We keep reminding ourselves that it's just a phase. It IS just a phase, isn't it??

Is It Somebody’s Birthday?

The three of us went to eat at O'Charley's after church tonight.

It was a lively place, especially in the bar, as all eyes were glued to the television sets watching our Carolina Panthers beat up on play the Chicago Bears. I could occasionally hear some groans over the din but more frequently the bar patrons would erupt in cheers over a big play.

After one such outburst, Eliana turned to Carmi and asked, "Is it somebody's birthday?"

She's heard waiters and waitresses hootin' and hollerin' more than once as they carried a small cake and candle to a diner's table.

Nope. Nobody was celebrating another year but we were celebrating a Panther's victory!
